Dr. John Sylvester, a world leader in Brachytherapy

Florida Medical Retreat has partnered with Dr. John Sylvester to bring you cutting edge treatment for prostate cancer. Dr. John Sylvester completed both his Medical Degree and specialty training in Radiation Oncology at UCLA. He was awarded the American Cancer Society Fellowship while chief resident at UCLA.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Sylvester has performed over 3,000 prostate brachytherapy procedures. He has developed, and assisted in the development of several technical improvements in the procedure, including how to better visualize the urethra during the procedure and how to optimally utilize R.A.P.I.D. strand.

He was the first physician in the U.S. to use 1 Echo Seed, a more visible (on ultrasound) radioactive seed. He was the lead investigator in a gene therapy protocol for salvage of external beam radiation therapy failures. He helped develop the newest thinnest seed with Ge-Oncura (ThinStrand). He has trained thousands of physicians in prostate cancer treatment.

The Image guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) program at his office at Lakewood Ranch Oncology Center uses cutting edge technology: Cone beam CT guidance, MRI/CT fusion treatment planning, the thinnest fiducial market (22 gauge) and latest rectal balloon technology.

Dr. Sylvester is also one of the four clinicians who wrote the most recent ABS guidelines used by prostate cancer Brachytherapists worldwide. He continues to lecture and lead prostate cancer panels at major medical meetings, such as the 2010 ABS Conference where he gave 9 talks while moderating a session on prostate cancer, and the 2011 ABS meeting where he was chosed to debate on prostate cancer treatment techniques. He is also the co-author of "The Prostate Cancer Treatment Book."

Dr. Sylvester recently published the results of his technical improvements in prostate cancer treatment in 1131 consecutive patients. He demonstrated a 100% success rate at avoiding rectal over dosage, a feat never before published.
